ENVIRONMENTAL READING

The other day we had a discussion during "Reader's Workshop" on whether or not my students thought they were readers.  Many of them said they could read a couple words, but didn't really consider themselves readers.  My goal for the lesson on Environmental Reading was to prove to them that they ARE readers.  So...I pulled out a laminated piece of paper with the "Ben and Jerry's" logo printed on it.  (See below)

Immediately hands shot in the air ready to read it.  "Subway Eat Fresh" and the word "Google" followed...and many more after those.  The students were reading!  They could read these signs because they have seen them many, many, many, times in their environment. So next time you drive down the street...test it out!  Ask your child to read their environment...I bet your kids know how to read more than you think they do!
